on Aug 01, 2016, Updated Sep 07, 2023 28 Comments I love preparing my own homemade seasoning mixes. They are perfect because they only take a few minutes to mix together, and I know what ingredients they have in them (unlike the prepackaged ones in the grocery store). I can also easily customize them to my tastes. This Italian Seasoning Mix is just one example of the homemade seasoning mixes that I like to make and keep on hand! Made with just a few ingredients that you most likely already have on hand, it makes cooking so much easier on those busy weeknights! Add it to chicken as it bakes, sprinkle a bit in spaghetti sauce while it simmers, and even quickly add to vegetables for additional flavor as they cook. You can also use this in place of the garlic and other spices in my easy homemade Italian Dressing recipe. It comes together in a snap!
How to Make Italian Seasoning Mix
When I make it, I make sure to make enough to have a good little supply to get me through a few months. Since I’m using all dried spices and seasonings, it is shelf-stable in the pantry as long as any of your other opened spices would be. Of course, I go through mine pretty quickly!
Ingredients
Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, notes, and estimated nutritional information.
basil oregano thyme rosemary garlic powder onion powder salt – You may choose to omit the salt in the seasoning mix and simply salt your dishes to taste once prepared. red pepper flakes (optional) – If you like adding a little heat to yours, you can include a bit of red pepper flakes. I usually do not add this to my mix as I prefer to add the red pepper separately to dishes based on what I’m making.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Storage Tips
Store the Italian Seasoning Mix in a jar or container with a tight-fitting lid. Keep the jar/container stored with your other spices in a spice cabinet or pantry away from heat and sunlight for best results. When stored properly, the seasoning mix should remain fresh anywhere from 1-2 years, depending on the freshness of the spice ingredients used to make this blend. Watch for color fading in the dried leafy herbs as a guide.
Uses for Italian Seasoning Mix
This mix is an aromatic all-purpose seasoning mix that has a wide variety of uses in numerous dishes. Don’t use old dried spices and herbs to make this mix. Start with new or somewhat freshly opened ingredients to make the seasoning mix so that it tastes fresh and delicious and keeps its fresh taste longer! Label your spice mix jar!
